A Question of Art

We are delighted to announce the launch of our debate section with the continuation of BANA's A Question of Art. Should the visual arts receive public funding? If so, what should that funding pay for? You can contribute to the debate here.

A Question of Art was a BANA public debate which took place on Friday 16 November, 6.30 pm at The Guildhall, Bath. It was chaired by Dr Alexander Sturgis, Director of The Holburne Museum of Art with:

  • Professor Geoffrey Crossick: Warden of Goldsmiths University & former Chief Executive of the Arts & Humanities Research Council
  • Sophie Mellor: artist and co-founder of Plan 9
  • Munira Mirza: arts consultant, researcher, broadcaster and editor of 'culture vultures'
  • Alastair Snow: arts consultant and Director of the PROJECT awards scheme
  • Jonathan Treadway: Director of Regularly Funded Organisations, Arts Council England

This was the second of BANA's public forums on questions concerning visual art and artists. The issue of public money for art is a hot topic right now, due to the economic pressures of the London Olympics squeezing arts funding.
